New York offers parents to lower the support debts they have with their children, with a term until October 31

For those parents who have accumulated child support debts, the New York City Department of Social Services (DSS) is offering the possibility of reducing the amount.
The program “Cancel your debt” The DSS is targeting parents who do not have custody of their children, but must still pay their expenses and currently owe at least $1,000 in child support and at least $500 of that amount is owed to DSS.
The participant must agree in writing to pay between October 17 and October 31 this year the current amount of support, if any, and $500 or more in arrears in debt owed to DSS. Payments are accepted by mail, phone (929-252-5201), in person or onlineusing a credit or debit card.
Upon receipt of your payment of at least $500, the Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) will match that amount by subtracting the same amount from your debt. For example, if you pay $700, that figure will be doubled in your favor and count as paying $1,400.
If your court order is pending collection, you must first pay the full amount of your most recent court-ordered support obligation that is due in October, if it has not already been met. If the remaining amount is no longer more than $500, it will not be matched, based on the “Cancel Your Debt” program criteria.
It is very important that before making the payment the father is informed and signs a specific agreement so that the benefit can be activated. Payments must be received by October 31, 2022 to get credit. More official information in Spanish is available herevia email at [email protected] or by calling 888-208-4485.
In addition, parents may be eligible for additional reductions of up to $15,000 over three years. And if you pay your principal in full, all the interest you owe to DSS can be eliminated.
